Students will be put into groups of 3-4 with other students in same age group. The group will be provided a task to complete that involves using science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The group will have time to brainstorm, create, and test before being judged on the best design. Each group will be assigned a high school mentor to help answer questions, coach, and support the students through the design process. Classroom teachers will also be available to support as needed. Possible design tasks can be found below. These may provide an idea of the type of tasks that be given to the groups.
Students will be judged on a STEAM rubric analyzing the groups' science, technology, engineering, art, and math skills as they build and create. Completion and a fully functioning design isn't completely necessary. It's the critical thinking and creativity that the judges are looking for. |
